Where it began...
I'm Nikki McGar, interior designer and founder of Nikki McGar Interiors.
Good design starts with really understanding the people who live there.
My job isn't to convince you to love what I love. It's to understand how you live, what you're drawn to and what matters most to you, then use my experience and confidence to shape that into something even better than you imagined.
That belief took root when I moved to the Peninsula and joined Greenhouse Interiors, training under renowned stylist and interiors writer Julia Green. Working alongside Julia changed the way I see a room. I learned how art, colour and layering can bring a space to life, and fell for bold, personality-filled design that feels lived in and loved. Her influence is still there in every home I work on.
What working together feels like...
We believe a home should feel like you, not like a showroom. Every project we take on starts with the people who’ll actually live in the space.
I’ll tell you when I think something will work, and I’ll be honest when I think it won’t. I’ll introduce you to ideas you may never have considered, find pieces you’d never have come across on your own, and take care of the details so they’re not keeping you up at night.
More than anything, I want you to feel looked after, confident in the decisions we’re making and excited about the home we’re creating together.
We’re known for our use of colour and for mixing in vintage pieces, creating spaces that feel collected over time rather than bought in one hit. It’s this approach that saw one of our recent projects, House for a Chef, featured in the Geelong Advertiser for its bold use of colour and considered styling.
The goal is always the same: A home that feels completely, unmistakably yours.
