The problem with this kitchen wasn't simply that it was dated. It didn't feel like them.

The tired cabinetry, industrial rangehood and cramped butler's pantry felt disconnected from both the family who lived here and the character of this beautiful old heritage home.

And that's something I hear from clients all the time. Their home works, technically, but they walk into it every day and something just feels off. It doesn't reflect their personality, how they live, or how they want their home to feel.

For the Newtown Kitchen, we didn't need to rip everything out and start again. We kept the beautiful marble benchtops and looked carefully at what was worth preserving, what wasn't working, and where we could make changes that would completely shift the feeling of the room.

New drawer fronts and cabinetry were given a hand-painted finish that feels at home with the heritage character of the house. The cramped butler's pantry was reconsidered, and the industrial rangehood became a feature rather than something to work around, finished in rich green Venetian plaster and now one of the heroes of the space.

The result feels warm, personal and considered. Not like a kitchen chosen from a showroom. Like their kitchen, in their home.

Because good interior design isn't about making your home look like somebody else's.

It's about finally walking into it and thinking, yes, this feels like us.
